You’ve seen those t-shirts around, haven’t you? You know the ones that say, “Keep Calm” and then some inspirational message. Well, the Bowie softball team could make their own t-shirt with the words, “Keep Calm, We’re Heading to State.” It’s that calm, cool demeanor of this team that has them just two wins away from a state championship.
“We have this ability to stay light-hearted and calm, no matter the situation,” said senior centerfielder, Jackie Ramos. “In the first game of our regional final series against The Woodlands we were down one run the entire game and rallied to win late. We weren’t worried at all.”
The Bulldogs (30-4) plan to keep that same “cool” outlook when they play San Antonio Brennan (29-7) in a state semifinal this Friday at 6 p.m. at McCombs Field on the University of Texas Campus. They expect a lot of fans clad in red and black, but they plan to stay focused on the game, not their surroundings.
“Since I was a child, I’ve been to many games there, but have never stepped on the field. I’m excited to finally get the opportunity to play there,” said senior pitcher, Alex McLennan. “But, we don’t plan on letting the atmosphere affect us.”
Bowie is making its second appearance in the state tournament. The Bulldogs lost in the state final to Pearland back in 2010.
“From the beginning of the season, we always knew we had a chance to win state. We always had confidence that we could achieve that, but we haven’t let it get to our heads,” said Ramos.
The Bulldogs have a senior-laded team and that’s a big reason for their success. Also most of this squad has played together since little league and select softball.
“That’s a big reason we have been successful. We are all friends. We’re all sisters. We have formed relationships that are larger than softball,” said McLennan. “The support we give each other is the reason we’ve been able to go so far. I’m excited we have a shot to win it all.”
Stay calm. Stay focused. It’s worked all season and the Bulldogs don’t plan to change a thing.
